TECOSO TEN STRATEGIES IN CONSERVING TANZANIAN ENVIROMENT


Strategies
TECOSO intends to adopt and implement ten main strategies. They are as follows:
Environmental Conservation Strategy
This entails raising awareness on environmental protection amongst the ljocal communities, encouraging participation and effective involvement of the people in all issues pertaining to environmental management and control of free harvesting. The aim is to miltigate against drought, cnserve soil, restore natural streams and increase food production for povertty alleviation.
Advocay and Lobbying Strategy
This entails effective interpretation of of government policies on environment and ways to reduce corruption and related vices in the society. In this way the biodiversity of Tanzania will be sustained.
Land Use Strategy
This strategy has two main components. First is control of population growth. Second, as population growth is controlled, there will be reduced stress on land use in the Districts and elsewhere.
Forestation Strategy
The main components of this stategy surround raising awareness of the environment to:
·         Control over tree harvesting and
·         Increase in participation and involvement to local communities in all matters related to forestation in each of the Upper, Middle and Lower zones.
This will lead to:
·         Mitigation against drought and poverty alleviation
·         Conservation of the soil and water sources, combating forest fires on Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru.

Education
Primary Healthcare
Activities include construction and rehabilitation of health facilities, public health education, education and a campaign against HIV/AIDS promoting prevention in the communities.
Improving learning facilities by rehabilitation of classrooms, meeting education expenses for needy children, increasing school attendance and improving performance.
Safe and Clean Water
Proviision of safe and clean water through rain water harvestin, digging bore holes, laying water pipes, irrigation schemes, protection and improvement of existing water sources so as to reduce the walking distance to water sources and also the reduction of water borne disease.
Gender and Enironment
This part of the overall strategy will contribute the following:
·         Education program on environmental conservation should be targeted to both women and men and as far as possible assigning women to leading roles.
·         Women being the most affected by environmental degradtion are the first affected by problems related to water shortages, pollution, lack of fire wood and poor harvests. They need to be motivated to protect the environment.
·         Wome are closer to the other members of the familly, community and law enforcers therefore can be very effective motivators and change agents.
·         Advocat for the rights of women education, eradication of child employment and sexual harassment.
Agriculture and Food Security
This entails the following tactics:
·         Train farmers on modern methods of farming, the use of improved drought resistant seeds and improved livestock development for better yeilds.
·         Introduce new crops such as vanilla, macadamia and safflo / rartum.
·         To establish demonstration plot (shanba Barasa) in every ward.
Vulnerable Groups
This entails the following:

·         Water facilities that are safe and clean for vulnerable groups
